Why thinking in problems when solutions are available?
During the weekend of December 6-8, this was a source of inspiration for the participants of #DiploHack Tallinn, organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Estonia in cooperation with Garage48, the Institute of Digital Rights and the Embassy of Sweden in Tallinn.
In the weekend of December 6 to 8, diplomats, hackers, students and representatives of NGOs gathered in Tallinn. Estonia will be the organizer of the next Freedom Online Coalition Conference, which makes it the perfect location for this #DiploHack with Internet Freedom as its central theme.
The hackaton was an intensive process in which local and international NGOs shared their problems with small teams. This resulted in some remarkable examples of teamwork: from totally different perspectives the challenges were discussed to find a technical solution.
As mentioned before, the small teams, with a mixed background, worked for the entire weekend to present its solutions on Sunday afternoon to the assembled audience in Radisson Blu Hotel. On Sunday, a panel discussion took place, with both prominent Estonians and a Dutch diplomat and (former) activists from Sweden and Denmark. The bugging scandal of Sweden in the Baltic States was discussed at length during the debate.
Both the jury and the audience chose as the winner of the hackaton an application, designed by the NGO Transparancy Estonia, which makes connections and networks visible within organisations (such as party membership and share holding in companies by board members). Second price was awarded to the NGO 451.ee that intends to remove unwanted pictures from the internet more easily, with a new platform. More examples of the achievements can be found on our website.
It was a great event since it made clear that everyone, with his own expertise and specialization, can help creating a better world. A weekend can make the difference, this conclusion is encouraging.
